DALE ARDEN is a contemporary wood bowl that I hand turned from Bradford pear responsibly sourced in nearby Scott County, Kentucky. I may be dating myself here, but fans of Flash Gordon may recognize the name of this bowl. As I turned this piece on the lathe, the shape reminded me of the shoulder pads from costumes in Flash Gordon. Dale Arden was Flash Gordon’s companion and the protype for future sci-fi heroines such as Princess Leia and Padme Amidala from Star Wars.
This contemporary wood bowl measures approximately 7-3/4″ wide, 1-3/4″ tall, and 1-1/4″ deep. A small “live edge” is visible on the upper rim of this piece. I polished the dish with food safe walnut oil followed by a protective coating of beeswax. Care instructions for the wood are included with the purchase of this piece.

A little about me….
I’m a historical archaeologist and spend my days excavating sites, analyzing artifacts, and writing up my findings. When I’m not in the field, you’ll find me in my woodshop. I primarily use found and reclaimed wood from here in Central Kentucky. It’s my hope that incorporating elements of the wood as I found it into each piece serves as a reminder that the object you see once was part of a beautiful, living tree.
